Leadership in Strategic Communication Research and Practice: Dougall’s research focuses on helping organizations find solutions to complex strategic communication and media relations challenges. She has competed successfully for large and small grants. Specific competitive grants include the integrated marketing communication component of a $7 million initiative to prevent traumatic brain injury among infants (Shaken Baby Syndrome) funded by the Centers for Disease Control, Doris Duke Charitable Fund and The Duke Endowment, 2007. Since 2005, Dougall has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings and conference papers. A recent example of her issues management work is online at the Institute for Public Relations Essential Knowledge Project.
Leadership in Programs and Partnerships: Dougall designs and teaches courses and programs that maximize ‘real world’ exposure, creating partnerships with corporations, government agencies and community organizations. She was appointed Academic Director of the M.A. in Technology and Communication in March 2009 and is now responsible for guiding the development of a new master’s program designed to empower early to mid career communication professionals to advance into leadership positions. She has won national awards for innovation and excellence in teaching and research and coached national award-winning students.
Specific examples of recent outcomes and honours include:
- The Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching, 2007. The Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching is a $10,000 annual award to the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication teacher whose creativity and innovation most meaningfully enhances students' learning experience. She was nominated by colleagues and students for this award.
- Finalist & Honorable Mention, PR News' PR People Awards: Educator/Trainer of the Year, 2008. The competition is annual and national. In its 61st year, PR News is an executive level, reader-supported publication.
- Corporate Communications Case Study Competition, Arthur W. Page Society, 2008 & 2007. Faculty adviser to the Grand Prize and First Prize, Communication School Division winners. The highly competitive national competition attracts entries from the nation’s most prominent business and communication schools. The award includes 4-figure cash prizes and an expenses-paid trip to the annual awards evening in New York City and to the Tuck Business School symposium in May 2008.
- PR Week Student of the Year, 2007, 2008, 2009. Faculty adviser to national finalists.
Leadership in Service and Engagement: In 2008, Dougall was elected to the Research Standing Committee of the peak national body for journalism and mass communication schools, the AEJMC. As a faculty member with a strong record in community engagement, Dougall serves on the Advisory Board of the APPLES Service-Learning Program (2008-2009), as well as the strategic planning and audit sub-committees. She holds advisory positions with various community organizations.
Dougall provides consulting services in strategic communication to private and public sector clients. Current and past clients include Nortel, SAS, the Institute for Defense & Business (customized crisis communication and media training for the Department of Defense), the Kenan Flagler Business School Executive Master’s Program, Health Policy and Administration, School of Public Health (customized crisis communication and media training). She consults to other organizations, including corporate and local/state government agencies and departments.
