Sign up for digital media economics and leadership classes next semester

Are you an entrepreneur? Or simply interested in better understanding the economic opportunities and challenges facing media companies in the 21st century?

If so, consider enrolling in two courses this spring — JOMC 551: "Digital Media Economics and Behavior" and JOMC 552: "Leadership in a Time of Change," both taught by professor Penny Muse Abernathy, Knight Chair in Digital Media Economics and Journalism.

These courses were not available during registration due to changes in course numbers, but both are open for enrollment.

"Digital Media Economics and Behavior" (TR 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.) examines such issues as the changing dynamics of consumer behavior, pricing, market segmentation, economic cycles and global competition. Through analyzing a variety of case studies on such media companies as News Corp, The New York Times, Google and Thomson Reuters, future journalists — as well as for advertising and public relations majors — should be better able to assess opportunities and risks of business enterprises they will encounter or are contemplating.

"Leadership in A Time of Change" (R 2-4:45 p.m.) examines the strategic choices facing media companies in much greater depth and offers advanced seniors and graduate-level students who take the seminar the opportunity to actually write and produce a case study on a media company.

Space is limited. For more information, contact Abernathy at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Sign up for spelling and grammar test

There is one remaining dates to take the spelling and grammar test during the fall 2009 semester: Friday, Dec. 4, 1 p.m. The test will be given in Carroll Hall 33. The sign-up sheet will be available one week prior to the test in the student records office.

From among the scholarship winners, the Foundation also selects up to six scholars and pays travel and living expenses for them to intern at foreign bureaus at such leading news organization as the Associated Press and Reuters and foreign English-language media like Cambodia Daily and the South China Morning Post. The essay of approximately 500 words should concentrate on an area of the world or an international issue that is in keeping with the applicant’s interest. It can be in the form of a story, news analysis or essay. Applicants are also encouraged to submit essays showing a strong understanding of, or interest in, global economic issues such as trade, finance, emerging markets, immigration or environmental impacts.

The cover letter should be autobiographical in nature addressing such questions as how the applicant developed an interest in this particular part of the world, or how he or she would use the scholarship to further journalistic ambitions. The judges respond well to applications showing strong reporting skills, color, and understanding or passion.

Winners will be contacted in December so that arrangements can be made for them to attend the Foundation Scholarship Luncheon in February 2010 in New York City at the Foundation's expense. Recipients are expected to attend.

Entrepreneurial news project

Computer science graduate students from Lawrence Technological University in Michigan and Washington University in St.Louis are working on an entrepreneurial project that targets audiences with too little time to read full-text news. The project will use the Internet's ability to quickly deliver content as well as the portability of handheld devices to present subscribers to-the-point news that is fast and easy to read. The goal of this project is to try to make people's life easier and simpler by pre-processing raw information for them.

After several months of programming, the news distribution Web site is working with the ability of sending out 50,000 e-mails automatically each day, while the iPhone client is in its final development stages.

The group is seeking someone with journalism talent as well as an entrepreneurial spirit to join the project. This person is expected to have the ability of writing and rewriting news that is precise and informative. He or she is also expected to be innovative and can bring fresh ideas to the project.
